Common Emergency Problems

Septic tank, grease traps or sewer line may break or cease to stop working properly, causing back-ups, and overflow

  1. Septic systems include a leach field, which is a trench that is filled with PVC pipe and rock —this is where your liquid waste is percolated into the ground. When a leach field is not working properly, your toilet might overflow, drains may make strange noises, the hook-up where your washing machine is connected may overflow, you may smell a foul odor in the air, etc. Septic tanks may also cause problems when they require pumping.
  1. Grease traps do require regular maintenance as required by the county you live in. Grease causes issues with the city lines causing overflow and back-ups. Grease does not dissolve, and may stick to the trap and pipes leading into the trap and city lines until it hardens. Hard grease in the lines will need to be removed with a snake or hydro jet process. The grease trap waste will need to be removed on a regular basis to keep these back-up and clogs from occurring.
  1. Sewage ejector tanks contain a pump that lifts sewage to the level of the sewer line so it can flow out of the house and into the septic tank. These are necessary for houses that have bathrooms below the level of the main sewer line, or to speed up waste water that does not flow fast enough. To prevent damage to a sewage ejector pump, it is important to only flush human waste. Sewage ejector tanks for commercial applications serve the same purpose, but can also grind waster before sending into city sewer system. When those pumps fail, a back-up occurs.
  1. Sewer line breaks and clogs can occur from root intrusion, shifting of the earth, a remodeled home requiring larger lines, and more. Sewer line breaks cause overflow and back-ups. The waste will need to be pumped so the repair can be completed.
